One of my favorite snacks my mother made for me growing up (and one of my favorite snacks to this day!) is this popular Filipino snack called Lumpiang Saging (Turon)—Lumpiang, Tagolog for the spring roll wrapping paper; Saging, Tagalog for banana; and Turon, the common name for this fried banana snack.

There are various ways to make Turon; some people like to add jackfruit, sweet potato, mango, cheddar cheese, and even coconut. My family, however, prefer to make Turons with just bananas. The recipe below is my family’s version of the snack with bananas, but feel free to add whatever you like!

Lastly, this simple yet delicious recipe is honestly perfect for any occasion. From house parties, summer picnics, to a dessert option for your next Thanksgiving dinner!

Hope you all enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • Menlo all-purpose egg roll wrappers (can be found at just about any Asian stores)
  • Whole steamed Saba bananas (can be found at just about any Asian stores)
  • Brown sugar
  • Vegetable oil
  • Egg (to seal the wrap)

Instructions:

  1. Defrost both the wrap and the bananas. They are kept in the frozen aisle at the store when you go to buy them, so you’ll want to keep that in mind if you’re hoping to make them for an upcoming event.
  2. Individually separate the wraps for easy access.
  3. Slice four bananas. Begin by slicing each banana in half the long way, then slice them into four equal parts the other way. You should end up with a total of eight slices per one banana (32 slices all together).
  4. Beat one egg and leave it off to the side.
  5. Coat the banana slices in the brown sugar.
  6. Wrap the bananas in the Lumpiang (wrap) by placing the wrap on the counter (with the corner, not the edge, facing the top in a diamond shape) and placing four slices of bananas horizontally in the center.
  7. Take the two side corners of the wrap and fold one over the other. Then, take the bottom end and fold it over until you completely wrap the banana.
  8. Dip your finger into the beated egg and place the mixture underneath the flap so that the whole wrap remains intact as you cook.
  9. Place a pan on the stove over low to medium heat with about 3-4tbs of vegetable oil and place the wraps onto the pan once pan is fully heated.
  10. Cook the wrapped bananas until they are lightly brown, then, take them out and place them on a separate plate.
  11. With a paper towel, remove all but 1-2tbs of vegetable oil from the pan and add 3tbs (heaps) of brown sugar into the pan and mix to form glaze.
  12. Place the cooked-wrapped bananas into the pan with glaze and keep turning them until the Turon are caramelized.
  13. Serve on a plate and enjoy!
